Westerwolde is Cittaslow
Cittaslow is the international mark of accreditation for municipalities that provide the highest quality living environment, local produce, hospitality, natural environment, infrastructure, cultural history and identity preservation.
As of June 2014, Westerwolde may call itself a Cittaslow region!
Mark for the quality of life
The origins of Cittaslow lie in Orvieto (Italy). Cittaslow is a movement that encompasses 120 municipalities worldwide, from Australia to Spain and from South Korea to Westerwolde! Westerwolde was the 6th municipality in the Netherlands to be awarded the Cittaslow mark of accreditation.
Focus on authenticity
In an age in which everything seems to be measured in terms of production and speed, Cittaslow aspires for the opposite. Its manifesto states: "towns where men are still curious of the old times, towns rich of theatres, squares, cafés, workshops, restaurants and spiritual places, towns with untouched landscapes and charming craftsman where people are still able to recognise the slow course of the Seasons and their genuine products respecting tastes, health and spontaneous customs".
A Cittaslow team visited Westerwolde and audited the region extensively. Eventually, this resulted in Westerwolde being awarded the mark of quality, which was accepted by the mayors of Vlagtwedde and Bellingwedde on 19 June 2014.
